El sitio de Sevastópol, que se inició en septiembre de 1854 y se prolongaría todo un año, fue uno de los episodios decisivos de la guerra de Crimea, en la que Rusia se enfrentó a una alianza turco-anglo-francesa. Lev N. Tolstói, por entonces alférez en el Ejército ruso, llegó a Sevastópol en noviembre de 1854. Entre junio de 1855 y enero de 1856 se publicaron sus Relatos de Sevastópol, tres crónicas que la censura mutiló y no se publicarían íntegras hasta 1928. A Tolstói le interesaba la psicología de los combatientes, su reacción ante la muerte y el horror, y las complejas sutilezas de la jerarquía militar.
